Foods to avoid and things you shouldn't eat with braces

Hard foods, sticky foods and foods high in sugar must be avoided. Hard foods can break or damage wires and brackets. Sticky foods can get caught between brackets and wires. Sugary foods can cause tooth decay during treatment. Also, nail biting, pencil and pen chewing and chewing on foreign objects can cause broken braces.

Examples of hard or sticky foods you should not eat

  • Starburst, skittles or other hard chewy candy
  • Caramels
  • Sugar Daddies
  • Taffy
  • Tootsie Rolls
  • Jolly Ranchers
  • Popcorn
  • Ice
  • Nuts
  • Hard taco shells
  • French bread crust/rolls
  • Corn on the cob
  • Apples and carrots (unless cut into small pieces)
  • Bagels
  • Hard thick chips, Pita chips
  • Pizza crust
  • Uncooked carrots (unless cut)

Examples of sugary foods to avoid

  • Soda
  • Sweetened drinks
  • Cake
  • Ice Cream
  • Cookies
  • Pie
  • Gum (sugar free is ok occasionally)
